A Spiritual Home for LGBTQIA2S+ People

We strive to include and deeply affirm LGBTQIA2S+ people at every level of congregational life — as ministers, lay leaders, friends, teachers, and colleagues — welcoming and accepting everyone as we are. LGBTQIA2S+ meanings are  L=Lesbian, G=Gay, B=Bisexual, T=Transgender, Q=Queer, I=Intersex, A=Asexual, 2S=Two Spirit, +=Other Identities

We are committed to the following, as a UUA-designated Welcoming Congregation:

  • incorporate an understanding of the experience and history of LGBTQIA2S+ people throughout all of our programs, including religious education.
  • affirm consensual caring and affection without regard for sexual orientation.
  • support marriage equality and conduct same-sex weddings.
  • promote justice, freedom and equality, and speak out when the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA2S+ people are at stake.

Our fellowship often has meetings specifically for people who identify as LGBTQIA2S+, as well as some groups and events that are open to allies as well.

Our Queer Friendly Congregation Team is open to everyone, and regularly participates in activism, Pride, educational events, and helps lead Sunday worship services for Coming Out Day. Check the BVUUF calendar for upcoming events! You are invited to join the Queer Friendly Congregation Team. For more information, email queer@bvuuf.org.

There is always more to learn and do to protect and support queer folx, and BVUUF strives to be a safe and supportive spiritual home for all people. Here is the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Welcoming Congregation website which features dozens of resources for enriching LGBTQIA2S+ lives and spirit. It notes, “Being recognized as a Welcoming Congregation is just the beginning, and is a commitment to the ever-ongoing work of being welcoming.”
